Spiritual Direction.
We all need a safe place, to be honest and tell the truth about what it is like to be human. Living in a broken world is hard. Neither faith nor skepticism exempts us from that reality. Faith may give us hope that all things will be made new and set right one day, but that does not mean life isn’t extremely painful. Our beliefs don’t take away the experience of the wilderness or the dark night; they often lead us there. Sometimes, the most tragic part of life in a broken world is the feeling that we are alone and have nowhere to go with our doubts, fears, and even our anger. Of course, there are beautiful and redemptive parts of life with God, and it matters that we notice and pay attention to those. Whatever season you find yourself in, you do not have to walk alone. That is the heart of spiritual direction.
Spiritual direction is a form of soul care. A Spiritual Director serves as a companion and accompanies you on your spiritual journey. Although the practice of spiritual direction may be new to you, it has deep historical and theological roots. A safe and leisurely space is created for you to come as you are, slow down, and meet with God. Together, we notice and explore your interior world, the state of your soul. A spiritual director asks questions, listens, makes observations, and may introduce spiritual practices when appropriate. The hope of spiritual direction is that as you tell the truth in the presence of another, you will grow in your awareness of God’s presence in your life and your response to God’s love. We are integrated human beings, and all of our lives are spiritual. Therefore, you can talk about anything you wish in your session.
